The Multi-Employer Pension Plan (MEPP), a plan that covers members in federally regulated workplaces, will see benefit increases!

What Does This Mean For You?
Retirees will see a 25% increase in their monthly payments starting with the February 2024 payment, which will also include the adjustment for the January 2024 increase.

IAMAW District 14 and Odessa A. were joined by Greg Mady of the EDLC, Karen Kuprys of the AFL and affiliate Unions in the freezing cold, to talk with employees at Weldco-Beales Manufacting about joining our Union! We thank you all for your support, and hope you get feeling back in your toes :)

Machinists District 14 represents Weldco Heavy Industries in Northern AB, and we are now in talks with employees at WBM Edmonton about experiencing the power of change through solidarity and forming a Union!

The group contacted organizer, Kyle Franzen, out of District 14, this was due to one of the employee’s previous histories working for Air Canada. Kevin Timms, of District 140 relayed the contact information to Kyle, and the process began.

A first agreement was bargained and ratified in early November, which established consistent pay raises and rights in the workplace. The new members will be part of Local Lodge 1722.

Kyle Franzen, “The IAM sets the example by bringing past experiences into a new workplace. Together, the issues that drove the group to organize was to tackle issues of wage inequality, work-life balance, and to seek structural stability. ‘United, we aimed for a more balanced and equitable future, grounded in our shared experiences.’ Drawing on our collective wisdom, we pave the way for positive change and contribute to a better work environment.”

This Daikin group is based out of Calgary, Alberta and performs HVAC supply and receiving duties to contractors in the area. Daikin is a global leader in the HVAC&R industry, with locations around the world.

They’re at it again, Council is considering giving your money over to profitable corporate landlords. On September 20th, City Council will be considering whether or not to offer a subsidy to convert downtown office space into residential units. This money gets us no share in the building or say in how the units are developed; we’re just expected to give money to corporations who already have it. This corporate welfare has got to stop and the money that is being spent by our city needs to be done in the benefit of working Edmontonians.

The current vacancy rate, which is roughly half of what Calgary’s was when they did something similar, is benefiting many non-profits and small businesses who are looking for affordable office space to rent. If these companies are allowed to rake in profits while rates are high they should also suffer the consequences when rates are low. Lower corporate profits are not the responsibility of working families.

While we agree that addressing safety issues downtown is an important goal and increasing the amount of people using the area is crucial in solving this, providing corporate welfare to profitable corporations is not the proper mechanism to use. The city owns office space that could be consolidated into Edmonton tower. If we are to be spending public money on bringing more people downtown it should be into the feasibility of transforming the city owned buildings where we can control the type of units created and ensure that they benefit working families.

Opinion polling has shown that nine in ten Albertans support national Pharmacare — we need to make sure that our government and local representatives hear this loud and clear.

Send an email to the Prime Minister, Health Minister and your local MP to let them know why it is important to you that they support national, universal Pharmacare.

Truth and Reconciliation Day is a day to remember

Truth and Reconciliation Day is a day to remember the hard truth of Canadas past, face it, and take action to do what we can to correct it going forward. District 14 and Local Lodge 1722 now have a Land Acknowledgement to be read and considered at all their future meetings. With this constant reminder we hope that as union members and community members that we can find ways to move towards gaining knowledge and understanding of Canadas past, by listening to courageous survivors, educators, and elders, by keeping engaged in Canada’s contemporary treatment of its indigenous peoples. We must remember, but we also must act!

A successful Labour Day BBQ is being held today by the Edmonton District Labour Council. Goes until 3:30pm with free hamburgers and hot dogs, fruits, snacks and drinks for the community. So far been a great turn out of Labour affiliates, community members, and Machinists!

Not even a hurricane can stop determined Machinists attending the IAM Unity and Growth conference in San Diego!

The 2023 IAM Unity and Growth Conference we received training, education and inspired IAM officers, members, staff, activists and other leaders to organize new members in all sectors and continue to embrace and strengthen the diversity of our union.

David Chartrand, IAM Canadian General Vice-President said this of the conference, “We need to get together often and share our stories – both victories and where we fell short. Exchanging strategies can only help us further along the path we need to go in order to make significant changes in the world around us. I look forward to the findings and reports leading out of the workshops.”

While we learned that after nearly eight years leading our union, two decades on the Executive Council and more than 43 years of membership, IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. will retire on Jan. 1, 2024. It was extremely encouraging to hear that General Vice President Brian Bryant will succeed International President Martinez as our next International President. We remain united more than ever and look forward to the IAM’s future growth.

After nearly eight years leading the union, two decades on the Executive Council and more than 43 years of membership, IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. has announced that he will retire, effective Jan. 1, 2024. IAM Resident General Vice President Brian Bryant will succeed Martinez as the IAM’s next international president.

The members of UNITE HERE! Local 40 in Richmond, B

The members of UNITE HERE! Local 40 in Richmond, BC, began strike action at the Sheraton Vancouver Hotel. The key issues are the guaranteeing of the daily room cleaning work; protecting tips for servers, bartenders, baristas, and bell staff; and securing a real wage increase.

The boycott is for 3 hotels:

– Sheraton Vancouver Airport
– Hilton Vancouver Airport
– Marriott Vancouver Airport

The hotels are in the same building complex and owned by the same ownership group. UNITE HERE! believes the employer will try to move customers, including unionized flight crews, from the Sheraton to the other two hotels next door, which are non-unionized. UNITE HERE! has expressed that they have spoken to the unions that may be impacted by this request. The BC Federation has also expressed support for the boycott.
