Today members of the IAMAW District 14 Human Right Today members of the IAMAW District 14 Human Rights Committee had the honour to bring the Northern Spirits Football team a donation from our Committee. The Northern Spirits are Canada’s first Indigenous all-girls football team, I should add, tacklet football team! Every game I have attended you do see the spirit of these girls, of this team! You can’t count the number of tackles, have seen the ambulance come at two different game, but these ladies still get out there, they are rough and tough and ready to show the world what they have! The IAMAW District 14 Human Rights Committee was founded in 2023, and in September of 2023 the chair of the Committee Ashley Speer, 1722 RS and District 14 delegate wrote our Districts first Land Acknowledgement. Land Acknowledgements are not just words they are a promise, they are read at the beginning of every meeting as a reminder to take action. Reconciliation is not just reading these out and remembering the atrocities, but taking action! Giving back to the indigenous communities, their arts, their sports, their children, and businesses, is a good start, but we can not stop here! Our Human Rights Committee is also working on educating members on truth and reconciliation, without the knowledge of the past and present we can not continue to move forward into a brighter future together, in Union! We call upon all Canadian Locals and Districts to take a stand and start supporting reconciliation in their communities, through education, reflection, and building relationships we can find new ways forward. @chandleroutdoors @ashleykathleen @northernspiritsfootball
Every year on May 1 workers around the world unite Every year on May 1 workers around the world unite to advocate for fair wages, better working conditions, labor rights, and human rights. Now more than ever workers have to stand together, communities and unions have to come together to ensure dignity, respect, and living wages for everyone. Prior to and after the May Day March up and down Whyte Ave in Edmonton this evening we heard from public sector workers, healthcare workers, private sector workers, migrant workers, women advocacy workers, freedom fighters and activists, and one thing is clear, in order to move ahead in our fight we must be steadfast, for each other. With inflation the affordability crisis is effecting all Canadians, in Alberta we are seeing the highest spike in interest rates, utilities, and food pricings. Workers and their families are struggling with these costs on top of their pre-existing struggles, whether that be equity in the workplace, staffing our hospitals and assistant living facilities, or migrant workers knowing and fighting for their rights in Canada. We as Unions have to keep lines of communication open with our affiliates and labour councils, we educate and empower each other, we can work together for better futures, strong collective agreements, higher wages and benefits, workers rights, and above all dignity, safety, and respect for all workers. May Day, or International Worker's Day is an important reminder every year that we are all workers, and together we have numbers, with solidarity we have power! Happy International Workers Day, to all Canadians and all Workers World Wide!

In 2023 alone 165 Alberta workers died on the job or due to work related illness of injury. These numbers are likely under reporter, and are much higher when you look across all of Canada and the United States. The group contacted organizer, Kyle Franzen, out o The group contacted organizer, Kyle Franzen, out of District 14, this was due to one of the employee’s previous histories working for Air Canada. Kevin Timms, of District 140 relayed the contact information to Kyle, and the process began. A first agreement was bargained and ratified in early November, which established consistent pay raises and rights in the workplace. The new members will be part of Local Lodge 1722. Kyle Franzen, “The IAM sets the example by bringing past experiences into a new workplace. Together, the issues that drove the group to organize was to tackle issues of wage inequality, work-life balance, and to seek structural stability. ‘United, we aimed for a more balanced and equitable future, grounded in our shared experiences.’ Drawing on our collective wisdom, we pave the way for positive change and contribute to a better work environment.” This Daikin group is based out of Calgary, Alberta and performs HVAC supply and receiving duties to contractors in the area.
